Black August (1:56) 2006

Based on prison letters and writings, Black August is based on the life of Black Panther George Jackson in the early 1970s. Gary Dourdan gives a great performance as Jackson, the founder of the Black Guerilla family, the militant branch of the Panthers. His story is told in a series of interviews between Jackson and David Dryer, a textbook editor, whose goal is to publish Jackson's book about the Soledad Brothers. Jackson's family and Angela Davis are shown as part of the larger story about the civil rights movement and their attempts to bring pressure in freeing Jackson and the Soledad Brothers. There were a few places where I briefly got lost and wasn't sure what was happening but the message of the cost of racism in America came across loud and clear. This is a heavy duty movie that is a must see for all history lovers and/or protesters of the civil rights era.
