Snow Flower and Lily are laotongs in 1817 China, Sophia and Nina are laotongs in present day Shanghai.
The film interweaves the relationships of the "sisters" by moving back and forth between the two centuries. The two stories have the same theme, the sisters have a very close relationship but there is an event, usually involving a husband/boyfriend, that causes a rift in the relationship. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan received very poor reviews but I thought the movie critics were too harsh. The scenes between Snow Flower and Lily were very engaging. The scenes between Sophia and Nina, shown in flashbacks, were confusing as to the sequence of events. I would definitely recommend this film as a rental.
