Charlie Chan in The Chinese Cat (1:04) 1944

Charlie Chan and Number Three Son, Tommy, are hot on the case. A man is shot to death in his study which is locked from the inside. The murderer, the murder weapon nor any clues are found. The investigation is closed after six months because the police have no leads. Charlie is approached by the murdered man's stepdaughter to reopen the case. A book has just been published and the author, a criminologist, is accusing her mother, the victim's wife, as the only real suspect. There is a single clue that Charlie alone picks up on, the victim was practicing chess when shot and the victim  left the bishop as the only piece standing. Much to my surprise, just like last night, I had never seen this movie. I thought it was pretty good. There was a reference to the war that was going on, and at the end, their was an appeal for the audience to buy war bonds. I did chuckle when Charlie took a taxicab ride that cost $4.90.
