YERT: Your Environmental Road Trip (1:28) 2010

Environmental Film Festival at Yale - World Premier
Ben, his wife Julie, and their friend Mark embark on a year long road trip to answer the big question, "Are we doomed?" They plan to visit each of the fifty states, forty nine by driving 45,000 in 365 days. They vow to accomplish this while meeting certain challenges. A big one was that they would reduce their carbon footprint by keeping all their trash with them in the car using two rubbermaid type containers. They also decide on goofy challenges like one of them eating only corn or corn products for a week while they are in Iowa. On the road, the trio visits a wind turbine farm in West Texas, an Ecovillage in Ithaca, a large farm market in Wisconsin. There are some worrisome visits, in Alaska we witness the melting of the permafrost and in West Virginia, strip mining mountaintops for coal. When Ben and his wife decided to take the year long trip, they mentioned that they were having fertility problems and a pregnancy was not a likely hood. Well, about three months into the trip, Julie tires easily and is also very hungry, and much to their surprise, Julie is pregnant with the due date of July 4th, the official end date of the trip. This is a humorous look at a very serious issue. At the end of the screening, Ben, Julie and Mark were available for a Q & A. The audience gave them a greatly deserved standing ovation.
